Story-  1034 words

It was dark when a large transport van rolled onto the desolate Belmont Park backside. The environment was hardly distinguishable from night and early morning. Weary eyes watched on with undeveloped anticipation as the vehicle came to a halt. Photographers got their trigger fingers ready at the sight of an impending Belmont winner. An unnamed assistant came meandering out of the shed row entrance to go aid with the unloading of frisky and fickle animals. A few drops of rain were scattered here and there, only a minimal sign of what was to come in the impending days. The latches on the big trailer door were lifted with seasoned promptness. The shuffling of hooves meant show time. Visitors and handlers alike perked up with marvel as the athletes have finally stepped foot on the territory of the last jewel. A slew of top Preakness runners took the early trip over to New York to get some timely familiarization with Big Sandy. First one off the van was a horse who sure was feeling his oats as he just about took himself where ever he pleased with an unfortunate soul in tow. No one would have known that this colt would be running a third race in just five weeks. The Derby winner was slowed for a few pictures, but the horse was much too enthralled with his new surroundings to stick around long. There were far more fascinating scents to smell and things to gaze at, perhaps the colt would make an appearance later.

Two other Preakness runners would contest the Belmont with Panic Button, and they were a couple of fillies he was familiar with. All three of them together were the few that managed to scrape enough together to get through the entire triple crown. A feat worthy of praise in itself. They also looked to be the main contenders this year with much of the other field coming in on lower class scores. The blaze faced filly, Cat N’ Fiddle, was gaining ground on the colt with every race they met; Buck, only able to turn away her charge by half a length in the Kentucky Derby. Then, there was Siren’s Serenade, she had enough personality wrapped up in herself for everyone.  She looks to be sitting on a big race if her temperament could be kept under wraps, she is probably the only one to benefit from the short turn arounds too. With her 24/7 brash, unending style, she could just outlast everyone in the mile and a half test.

“Cuidado!” A painted horse face, then torso, then bum came strolling out just as the others were about to stroll in. The stud chain jangled around his muzzle without anyone attached. Buck scuttled around in the gravel patch looking for a bite to eat, but instead found a group of people that emitted all kinds of sounds and lights. -

The downpour was relentless in the days leading up to the classic race. A meteorological disturbance like this diminished hope of a sunlit finale. Forecasts showed rain from the day of the draw, to the day of post time. It would be a bummer in the grandstands, but a bigger nuisance in the planning stages. A wet track is a game changer, but running in a potential bog completely flipped the script. Officials sent out statements left and right about the condition of the track; cancellation was obviously ousted as an option. Broadcast agendas and stakes schedules would be thrown into a wreck if something as historic as the Belmont Stakes was altered. Multiple turf races were no longer expected to remain on the grass and the subsequent scratches came in waves.

The situation was unprecedented for the son of Release The Panic. He’s not yet been asked to execute a race in this kind of weather and the distance was already a worn-out question for not just him but every other horse set to go against him. Running a mile and a half in wet cement is reinforcing the race’s title.

“Test of the champion’s, hm?” Post time was drawing closer for the Belmont Stakes. The jockeys stayed in their respective locker room to prolong their security from the elements. Kit sat there going back over the strategy discussed throughout her weather generated downtime. Ray had little choice in what activities he could supervise the splashed colt undertaking. Panic Button had his tasks reduced to jogging and shed row walking in the days leading up to the race. Everything was kept minimal and monotonous for the sake of keeping the horse together.

“Hey, uh, we’re headed out now…” Kit got caught lost in space, nothing short of the usual before these big races. “I know it’s pretty wack out there, but-“

“Wack?” She came back to terms at the sound of American slang, still an unfamiliar ground. The little man talking to her must have been aboard one of the newcomers because he sported an unacquainted face; nonetheless, though, he seemed friendly enough. “Oh, my mistake.” She got up of the bench with an inhale and with the spin of her crop, she pushed past the stranger. Net vremeni dlya druzey.

“The skies have closed down the water works just in time for the Belmont Stakes! How lucky are we! We’ll be right back to continue coverage of the 151st Belmont Stakes. Stay with us.”

The sky was still heavily shrouded in dark clouds that heavily pressed the stage. Few patches of light broke through with brilliance and illuminated the track in erratic grace. Large pools were situated on the sealed surface, a lot of the excess water simply had no place else to go. Hooves splattered mud everywhere on the slick, messy track. Riding a pig would feel natural at this point.

Panic Button made his way through the tunnel to the tune of New York, New York and the thousands who attempted to chime in with Sinatra. The Belmont was to serve as the ending to his Triple Crown tale. There were no comparisons to be made now, his father could not go all the way. This colt will have to finish this trial in his own way.
