Description Humpback whales are known as the "acrobats of the sea" because of the dancing they do both below, but more so, above the surface. That is, they sometimes do various gestures when they breach the surface, such as spinning around in the air or slapping the surface with their fin. Behavioral analysis shows this to be a form of communication, combined with their 'singing.' The slapping of the surface with their fins is usually a sign of aggression.

Taken with a Olympus Stylus 1030 SW with an underwater enclosure in The Silver Bank, which is in the Bermuda Triangle, between Turks and Caicos and the Dominican Republic (essentially the middle of the ocean. I was on a live-aboard boat, the Turks and Caicos Explorer II, for a week whale watching with Aquatic Adventures.)
