Description There's some concept work for this guy in the scraps section, but I wasn't happy with the face because he too closely resembled another of my characters, and it just wasn't working for me. This version is loosely based on Neil Gaiman, only greyer and with a beaky nose. I don't know if he'd be flattered or not. I do think he has the appropriate regal-yet-scruffy look with a beard.
The Wandering King (who spends way too much time as a raven, and forgets how to use his hands as hands) is an original character idea for the Labyrinth setting. The costume is mostly based off an old Hallowe'en costume I made myself.
Watercolor pencil.

Gaiman looks good with a beard, and there were some nice photos I used for reference. Thank you so much! It's a small painting, I feel like I could have got more detailed if I'd done it bigger.

The title made me think of a book I am reading right now called "Hood" From the King Raven Series by Stephen Lawhead
Nice!

I haven't read that one, but now I'm curious now! I think he might be a little bit of an archetype, though. I wouldn't be surprised.

I finished it just last night, I thouroughly enjoyed it (as well as the author's note about the history of the character ).
Since it's a trilogy, the book doesn't end the story, but I liked it (I will have to wait to get the next one >.< ).

That's a cool idea, very interesting...perhaps as a rival to our Goblin King or just BEING there... Clever, another 'king'!

He's not meant to be a rival precisely. I have a comic planned out and in the works. The Wandering King is older than Jareth, but since he basically rules over travelers his kingdom doesn't cover any specific land. He's always traveling, and he tries to help and protect his subjects, so he's really a pretty gentle and un-kingly kind of monarch. He's looked down on by most of the other rulers in the Underground, of which Jareth is only one. If the goblins have a king, after all, so must the trolls and dwarves and who knows what all else...

Exactly, though by rivalry since I don't know your story meaning 'another king' or something, with the possibility of many other thoughts with it.

Yeah, I need to get it colored and uploaded, I have the first couple of pages penciled, but I'm doing it in watercolor pencil too and it takes a while.

I love that kindly look in his face, along with that overall combination of roughness and dignity. Seems a very different personality from Jareth's--maybe a mentor figure?

I'm so glad that shows in such a small image! Yes, he's a very kindly and un-kingly kind of king, and he's older than Jareth. I have a comic in the works... but he's going to be more of a mentor figure towards Sarah, not Jareth.
Mostly because it's hard to see Jareth taking advice from anybody.

So true. Jareth would probably respond to any attempt at mentoring with a "Bog off!" or something to that effect

And the Wandering King would just shrug and move on.

What's with the limb through his head?

...Oops. It's supposed to be behind his head, but I guess I could have placed it better. Maybe there's something I could change to show the depth...
