Description From 2003. Color pencil on Rives paper, 36x26in

Not much to say about it. It was big, it was difficult, and I ground my teeth into a paste trying to finish it. (And it took me a few months to realize that I never got around to finishing the ears. o_O I promise to fix that before I even think about making prints of this available.) The idea behind it -- biomechanics. Maybe she's some cybernetic organism that draws energy from "energy springs" that crop up in the form of these weird "cyber trees." Or something.

Holy hell that's detailed. This is beautiful. Wow. I like colored pencils but I cannot get realistic skin tone to save my life. Plus, you're right, it gets all waxy and therefore shiny, so it's hard to light it right without a glare.

All of the textures and colors are just CRAZY! Did you just make this up as you went along, or did you plan it out beforehand?

Oh, and here's another to the list!

rho-cass In reply to DaleNorvell [2004-12-29 00:45:17 +0000 UTC]

I've been working with color pencils for years and they STILL manage to drive me nuts. Especially with skin tones. I think every human from now on should be born with smurf-blue skin. That would make things a lot easier on us poor artists.

And yeah, I did make it up as I went along for the most part. I've never been too good at planning out my work. It comes about on it's own and drags me along for the ride. Which is a good thing, I suppose; I'm very very lazy, and though planning out a work has its place, thinking about it too much beforehand just makes me become bored with the drawing before it's even started.

Thanks for checking out the pic, man! I'm glad you enjoyed it so much.

rho-cass In reply to allisonm [2004-12-03 04:18:26 +0000 UTC]

Is there anyway to shut off notification when you're just updating a deviation? Because every time I make even a minor edit to something it alerts everyone. I don't want it to look like I'm spamming people or anything.

allisonm In reply to rho-cass [2004-12-03 19:06:19 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, check for check boxes as you go through the edit options? I know it can be done for journals.

Thanks for doing it!

Hm.

You wouldn't ever consider posting a larger scale version, would you? The bottom-half is extremely hard to observe and your beautiful detail is lost.

I've never played any of the Final Fantasy games, but I've seen the designs and images for X and X-2 and they're absolutely stunning (There's something about Square's stuff that just so damn sexy). I'm flattered you see fit to compare my work to something so beautiful.

evanjensen [2004-11-23 00:28:16 +0000 UTC]

Wish you had a bigger image. Aside from the difficulties in lighting it, that such intricate work can only be appreciated fully when you can see the detail. and the huge amount of watermarking takes away from the image. It's a bit excessive. I think that one in the corner would have been fine alone. Or the one across the middle. The pencilwork is great, and very decoratively cool. Like an art nouveau image.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rho-cass In reply to evanjensen [2004-11-23 05:10:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, a lot of people have been saying they'd like to see a larger version. I'm starting to lean more toward uploading a new version, one without the watermarks in the corner. And yep, art nouveau was a big influence on my work, particularly Mucha.

I can't wait to have it available for printing. I just haven't figured out how to get it scanned. It's pretty big ...

evanjensen In reply to rho-cass [2005-01-10 02:04:49 +0000 UTC]

Take it to Kinkos. If they can't do it, take it to a printing house or a newspaper.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rho-cass In reply to evanjensen [2005-01-10 03:02:40 +0000 UTC]

Newspaper? Hmm. Never thought about that. If all else fails I'll give the office a call. We have a Kinkos here and I'll try them first, but most likely I'll wind up having to ship it off to have it scanned someplace else. This is a small town, and I don't have a lot of options. We can't even get slide film developed here.
