Isn't that supposed to be "hand-blown?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

rhodespottery In reply to Goddess-Azura [2008-12-06 22:46:04 +0000 UTC]

It's made out of clay, and I "throw" it on a pottery wheel.

Yeah, I've been told. Stupid mistake on my part for not reading the artists comments carefully enough

rhodespottery In reply to Goddess-Azura [2008-12-07 16:52:28 +0000 UTC]

Not stupid. I've seen a technique where you throw a clay bottle on the wheel, then blow it up like a glass balloon. Glass blowing and clay throwing have many things in common.

Jade-Pandora In reply to Goddess-Azura [2008-12-06 21:50:57 +0000 UTC]

Pardon me adding a little thought here about that...

I think "hand-blown" would be when you're making something made of glass. "hand-thrown" would be for clay.

Either way, it's such a beautifully unique item, wouldn't you agree?

is there a type of clay or a trick?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rhodespottery In reply to Realm-Of-The-Shadows [2008-12-07 16:39:46 +0000 UTC]

I use a type of clay from Laguna Clay Co. called Soldate 60. For my type of work, it has good thermal expansion/contraction properties and also a structural rigidity that I like. The trick, I think, is to push a design or idea to the point of failure, and then back off a little.

very cool, are you saying that that whole thing on top is copper? It makes sense since copper takes on the beautiful rainbow coloring with a medium heat, I know this because I use to use that coloring a lot in my metal work.

beautiful clay work and metal work.

rhodespottery In reply to nonparticipant [2008-12-06 22:53:13 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, I should have been more specific in the description. The top is made out of clay also, but I make a glaze that's copper and cobalt based...so I guess technically, it's both clay and metal.

Thanks again for the comments!
