Description Barry is a Highland Pony about 14.1hh his full name is Glenbanchor Barra

Highland ponies are native to the Scottish Highlands and were bred to transport Red Deer that were shot by the stalkers from the highlands back down to flat areas (they were used for other jobs too like logging etc); so the saddle is very big a tough and this oned has been repaired many times and has patches (This makes each saddle unique), it has many straps and ropes to hold the deer on and in the case of a stag keep the antlers away from the pony's neck preventing damage.

Each saddle is different, the normal ones have a high front and back and are difficult to ride in, whereas this is a combination so you can ride in it too making it resemble a more normal saddle, so the Gilly (the pony handler who grallochs (guts ) the deer can ride up the hill to the carcass, gralloch it, tie it to the saddle and walk back down. Highlands were used before Tractors and now they are being used more frequently.

There are no stirrups as they would get in the way, but it can have them put on it has the breaching and breast straps to stop the saddle moving- it has to stay put so the horse doesnt get damaged

Lovely shot and thank you for explaining about this. My question would be: if the Gilly isn't riding, I'm assuming the deer would be positioned on the saddle, in the middle of the back?

yeah, the deer is tied to the saddle with all the straps, sometimes there are more than one deer on, there is no room to ride so the ponies walk behind the gilly your welcome

right here we go:
Barry is a Highland Pony about 14.1hh
Highland ponies are native to the Scottish Highlands and were bred to transport red deer that were shot by the stalkers from the highlands back down to flat areas so the saddle is very big a tough and this oned has been repaired many times and has patches (This makes each saddle unique), it has many straps and ropes to hold the deer on and in the case of a stag keep the antlers away from the pony's neck preventing damage
each saddle is different, the normal ones have a high front and back and are difficult to ride in, whereas this is a combination so you can ride in it too making it resemble a more normal saddle, so the Gilly (the pony handler who gralecks (nnot sure how to spell but it means to gut) the deer) can ride up the hill to the deer, gut it, tie it to the saddle and walk back down.
there are no stirrups as they would get in the way, but it can have them put on it has the breaching and breast straps to stop the saddle moving- it has to stay put so the horse doesnt get damaged

Thank you for the great explanation, though I hope no deer was killed and brought down from the highlands in the last years
The whole composition of this saddle is very complex and unique, I wonder how did it came to be the way it is, how many trials did people had to do before they could create the perfect saddle for the job.
Your pony looks very good and well treated, and the saddle is well preserved
Thank you for your patience and time!

Barry isnt trained to, but they use tractors these days so they are hard to get hold of, they are tryiing to use them again to be more ecoomical (btw they call the ponies Garrons)
The Gilly would have the saddle made for his pony-or to fit all his ponies if he has more than one, obviously antlers would tear the leather or it would just wear so they would patch it up with stiches ad staples, it's stuffed with horse hair amongst other things, i don't think there was a perfect saddle, as it depended on if you wanted to ride or not, or your Garron's size, how many deer you trannsport etc but the saddles were very personal to each gilly and his pony/ponies
we have a few saddle but only restored this one, it took some time and money and it weighs a ton!
Barry doesn't do too badly food and treatment wise
your welcome, I am happy to do it thankyou for showing interest
