Description So, this is a revisit of my first Sakura piece [link]

I really wasn't satisfied with how it turned out as time went on, and I decided to redo it completely. Still used the same photo reference from Pepstock as my base [link] .

Anyways, the hair is much better this time around and looks more like Sakura's. I'm still not completely satisfied, but my technique is getting better. I had to redo it several times actually, until I went with the version that I have here now. I kept falling into the habit of trying to draw every strand each time. What I've ended up with here is putting in blocks of color for the lights/darks and then just adding some strands over top. It's working for now, but I think I'll need to refine the method.

Looking between this and the original version - I can't believe how blotchy my shading was on that. How'd I let myself get away with that? Still, if there was no improvement, nothing would ever change. Plus I feel my use of colors is getting better as well. I'm not relying on darker versions of the base color for all my shading.

wow, looking back at the original piece, you've improved a lot! the shadows and colors in this one are lovely

(and I don't think she looks fat at all... she looks like a real girl with actual body mass o__o I love seeing anime characters interpreted realistically, it takes a lot more imagination and the result is way more unique and interesting.)

Oh that version 1 piece. I'm so embarrassed to see that now, especially when I look at these side-by-side. What was I thinking of with those color choices!?!

Thanks for the kind words. I find I like trying to do anime characters realistically. It's a bit of a challenge and isn't the usual cell shading seen more often (not mentioning that I probably couldn't do a decent cell shading job if I wanted to).

The colour's much better than in the first one, but you've kind of damaged the shape of her face. She's got the facial structure of a fat girl, now, and it doesn't carry into her shoulders.

I wish I could point and say "this is why", but I suspect it's in the shading. The lightness under the chin is too bright, and makes it look bulging -- that much is certain. And I think the cheeks may be shaded too roundly and too low, but I also might be talking out my ass.

Hmm, not sure I agree on the "facial structure of a fat girl" part, but I can agree on the cheeks maybe being shaded too roundly though. In fact, I narrowed the face slightly from the photo reference, at least on the right side of her face, although I didn't shade the left side to make it more defined. And yeah, the area under the chin is probably a bit too bright, now that I'm done with it and looking after a break.
