I really wish THIS could have been the ending for Vanitas. Sure, the guy was a jerk, but I still think he deserved a happier ending.
As an aside, though, I've heard fan theories that Vanitas is the character "Darkness," who talks to Maleficent in one of the more-recent KH Chi story parts. He tells her she's trapped in a loop of some kind, and they theorize that, due to his last line, that he "is darkness," that that makes him that character. Just a theory.
