Description The worlds least informative step by step! Was pretty curious to see what the stages looked like together. This is the main method of colouring I used through the last year of college, not really sure about it. Miss the old graphite details and it'd be nice to be more...painterly I guess! You can tell I was struggling with that background haha, shoulda left it at the first wash I think, so hard to reverse decisions. But I always feel like I'm stopping short, so I go too far and end up like nooooo. But then I look at stuff again later and realise I didn't go far enough! Argh :'D

You use sketchbook paper?! Anytime I try doing more than 1 layer the paper ends up warped... how do you manage it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ricefish In reply to Temeraire [2016-03-12 07:31:49 +0000 UTC]

Yep! I like how it has a little more grain than hot press watercolour paper without being super toothy, and I just have so much of it I need to use up. The paper will warp for sure though if you're not super careful...I have to keep my washes small and not load up my brush very much, and immediately after applying (giving myself 4 or 5 seconds to get the paint on the paper, haha) I hold the paper flat with my hand. If I used a lot of water it would just stick to me and the colour would lift off :'D I hold it down for a minute and the warmth and pressure of my hand flattens out the warp before it can form properly. It's a habit I've gotten into that's really pretty daft, I'd definitely recommend people find an actual watercolour paper they like so they don't have to do that :'D
That's one reason my backgrounds almost never consist of a big area of one colour (it's impossible!), and probably how I got to be so details oriented, haha. Cheap paper!

Oh, neat! Yeah, it doesn't look like cheap paper... but those are some good tips!

Oh my gosh... This is absolutely beautiful, and I appreciate you taking the time to put the process down step-by-step! I love seeing artists' progress shots.

I did not know to effectively make more saturated colors with water colors, you had to layer on the paint! This is very informative (not to mention BEAUTIFUL WORK.)

What pencils and papers are you using now? was it sketch book or bristol and the derwent studio / colorsoft?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ricefish In reply to lady-cybercat [2015-07-16 09:57:26 +0000 UTC]

This was sketchbook paper (200gsm cartridge), but I still use bristol and occasionally hot pressed watercolour paper. The pencils I use are faber-castell art grips and one medium flesh polychromos, even though I really don't like the consistency of the latter. It's just a real handy colour! The art grips are fairly hard, sharpen to a fine point but aren't waxy, so I love those. I use a pentel 0.3mm pencil with HB lead for the guide sketches.

btw is a 'cartridge' just another name for 'drawing paper'? I've never heard this term used like that before. Thanks!!

Love seeing how you make your beautiful work! Do you have some really good watercolor paper that can take the weight of multiple layers? out of curiosity how big is this painting in inches?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ricefish In reply to Bear-hybrid [2015-07-16 10:03:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! This is 200gsm sketchbook paper (fairly heavy), but a lot of regular sketchbook papers can take multiple layers on a small scale, since you don't need to use much water. this is just under 5 inches across and 3 inches high. I'd recommend hot pressed watercolour paper for something you don't have to worry too much about damaging, though!

Ahh come on, it's pretty informative! It was very interesting to see how you work, and I love the way you mix the color pencil lines, seems so intuitive...I mean, you have pink right beside blue in some parts, I wouldn't know how to manage that. And I love the background, it composes beautifully with the character's colors. Now, how to know when to stop a painting is always a struggle...haha

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ricefish In reply to agataylor [2015-07-29 12:08:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Yeesss it's so hard, especially when you get used to spending a certain amount of time on a painting. I think I can't possibly be finished if it didn't take so long it started to get tedious :')

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

agataylor In reply to Ricefish [2015-07-29 14:51:23 +0000 UTC]

Hah, that's a good way of telling when to stop
I don't keep track of the time I've spent on a painting (although I always want to, but I forget to track it sometimes and in the end I don't know how much time I took xD), but I've stopped painting some works when I got to that tedious point, or alternatively, the "oh gosh I can't even stand looking to this painting anymore!" point, hehe.
