Description This John Carter piece is pen & ink on 11x17 bristol board. It's been used in promotional materials, prints, and is the opening (splash) page of the comic itself.

Mostly here, I was of course going for a dramatic pose, but the real fun was in playing with the light/shadow and the textures on the different types/quality of clothing.

He's for sale if you want him. He'll come with a lovely copy of this print , signed if you like. Just contact my agent, Craig, at craig@wednesdaysheroes.com for details.

Scripted, penciled, inked, and lettered by Richard Cox (me) with lavish colors by Thomas Boatwright, our faithful adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ A Princess of Mars is published weekly, on Tuesdays.

This looks really cool, and I'm excited about seeing more. I'm a huge, HUGE fan of the Barsoom series. It's why I started reading science fiction, and probably the primary inspiration for most things in my life.

I have one question, if I may. I understand it's a personal adaptation, but why the goatee? I don't want to offend you or something, just a curiosity. I'm interested in the ways you've decided to adapt these stories.

Not a bad question at all. I was expecting people who hadn't read the books to ask about his hair instead, which is short in the book as you know.

Honestly, I knew I wanted him to have some sort of facial hair, as Barsoomians are completely hairless (below the head). It would be another way to make him stand out (especially considering this was originally a b/w undertaking). So I was making note of facial hairstyles while researching Virginia calvarymen. I gave Powell the standard handlebar and after verifying goatees in photos (I researched a LOT for this) I went with that. I wanted something more closely cut, like his hair as well.

The unintended irony is that it makes him look a lot like me -- light eyes, close black hair, goatee.

Thanks for asking, and please comment and ask questions when reading the comic -- I love talking about this stuff, and I really love the Barsoom series.

Thank you for the excellent, detailed, and informative response.

I had actually always remembered him with shoulder-length hair, but I thank Michael Whelan's amazing covers for that!

As for the goatee, it makes perfect sense. It was just something I'd never seen given to the character, and I was curious. Again, thank you for the response.

You sound like a huge fan, if not a bigger fan than I, and that makes me even more excited to see more of your Barsoom work and your comic. I'll definitely keep my eyes on this, and comment when I can, I love this series and talking about it as well.

I don't know if I'm all that much of a bigger fan, if at all -- I'm just knee deep in reading the novel very closely, and researching this stuff for the comic. I'm noticing things I never did before, which I'll be commenting on in the comic.
