Gotta love authors. I will check out South Riding. That name rings a bell. Wasn't that story filmed for Masterpiece Theatre?
As for the other. Angles killed Picts. Pagan Rome 200 CE conquered and occupied lands of Britains, and Angles. Saxons invaded and merged with Angles. Pagan Vikings raided and bred with Romanized Scots, and Anglo-Saxons forming the Dane-Law. Normans killed Saxons, and forced them into servitude, and they practiced the same faith--were related by blood, and were the people who eliminated Dane-Law.
Christians have destroyed other Christians throughout history. Englishmen killed Scots, Scots killed Englishmen. And who can forget those long campaigns between Marcher barons, and the Welsh, and Norman dominance of Ireland? Conflicts from the days of The British Empire haunt us to this day.
The UK is not a place of sweetness and light. The peace in Northern Ireland is tentative at best. With the NATO allies focused on South Asia, North Africa, and the Arab Peninsula, that crisis has been for a time overshadowed, and overt actions are rare. However, never underestimate the continued hatred between extremists of Orange, and Green. I wager the silent conflict of RCs vs. Anglicans will continue to haunt all of us who love peace.
Yes, that monolith is fantastic, as are all the barrow mounds, and other stone-age relics around the British Isles.
I saw on PBS that a wooden post and lintel village is currently being unearthed somewhere in Northumbria. Archeologists date the village at somewhere around 12,000 BC. That they lived in houses similar to more modern wood structures has created quite a stir among scientists. You might want to check that out.

Well stated sign!
PBS = Public Broadcasting System, the only non-commercial, non-profit television network in the USA. South Riding did show here. I caught a few episodes. I love the story of the boy who is mentored by his teachers in rural England. The dialects are so accurately portrayed, I have trouble understanding much of the dialogue, but I hope to see that series in full. Masterpiece Theatre ran Upstairs, Downstairs, and other great English series.
It is the network where we get to watch Top-Gear (from about eight years ago, but still awesome) and Masterpiece Mysteries gives us many great series, such as the masterful Poirot, Miss Marples, Inspector Lynley, etc.
The series, "Mystery!" brought us Brother Cadfael, who is naturally close to my heart. I love the way he could solve crime, even in the Middle Ages. It illustrates how English Common Law provided coroners, etc. who would investigate crime even 700 years ago.
It is how I have been able to see Faulty Towers, Are you Being Served?, and way back when I was a kid, Doctor in the House.
We also have BBC America which brings more contemporary series such as Robin Hood. That series is just too much fun, and Richard Armitage as Sir Guy of Gisbourne is hot, hot, hot! Armitage is the best known British actor in the cast.
I want to see more of your photos of India and British archeology.

I think we get ITV her on free digital (once called UHF). Hmmm. I'll hunt the network down, then the series. Richard, I only live, like 8,000 miles away...I'm likely to post a lot of clueless comments. *waa* LOL!
