Bourgeois' motivation is interesting and to the point. Apparently she considered her mother her best friend...steadfast and clever among other things.
Her mother, being the answer to the "..why the spider" question.

Yes the spiders apparently are not meant as menacingly as they first appear. Their massive presence is confrontational but... not necessarily targeting everyone. A lot to think about in Bourgeois's work. Beverly asked me why I like it - I do - it certainly isn't comforting - but it's a unique and strong voice, and that's what I like.

always interesting in museums - to see the mix of stuff I aspire to create on the level of, and other work that I wouldn't care to have made. big Rauschenberg retrospective just closed - some of it just phenomenal and other - and in its own way that's encouraging.

It's a good question. Some artists are noticed and more or less successful just because they want to be, and try to be, though their work is no great shakes. On the other hand, the work isn't seen at all if we don't get it out there somehow. Where is the balance in between - is it possible to have one.
