where we used to live in Connecticut there was a little Italian cheese shop (owned by Italians not all Italian cheese i mean) and the smell inside it could almost knock you down. i think i only ever went in there once! but i've never forgotten it.

it's funny - i grew up eating mostly quite bland food - what we call here a "meat and potatoes" kind of diet. (that's what we literally ate quite often too.) but when i was exposed to all sorts of strong-tasting things i had never had - things like feta cheese, all kinds of olives, blue cheese - i loved them. um - not hot peppers though.
