Description
A little moss terrarium I made to welcome Spring.It was so nice and warm today, I realized how much I had missed all the sounds and smells of nature.
This terrarium is a way to kind of capturing this day ^^
P.S.: That's a snail shell, not a living snail inside.

I made my own terrarium inspired by your photographs a couple of weeks back, and sadly I spotted some mould growing amongst the moss this morning. I was wondering if you know how to stop the mould from spreading? Do I open the jar to let out some of the moisture, for example?

In my experience the mold usually goes away on it's own after some time. But you can just try to get a cloth and scrape it off, if it's growing on the glass.
The book I have doesn't offer much advice on that but I found this article after a quick search: www.stormthecastle.com/terrari…
Also, as they advice in the article linked above (and in the book about terrariums I have) you can put a thin layer of crushed/activated charcoal between drainage layer (pebbles) and the soil to create a filter for the terrarium air - should also make it more resistant against mold as I understand it.
AAaand, the mold can also come from the terrarium being a bit too wet and/or put into direct sunlight, which would "cook" the plants (are waterdrops condensing on the glass walls?).
Getting the amount of water right is to me probably the trickiest part. Always add a bit too much or too little : D

Okay, thanks for the info! The mold hasn't really spread, so I'm hoping it will go away in time. There is condensation on the glass, but the jar is never in direct sunlight.

Birds ripped apart my saxifraga plants on the balcony and I added a small piece to the moss terrarium just to see what would happen and I'm so happy to see it just continues growing after being tortured

Jaaa, ich hatte auch von jemanden ein Video gesehen, der eine kleine Ameisenkolonie zur Beobachtung in so einem Terrarium hatte.
Aber das hat er dann immer mal aufgemacht zum füttern und so.
Wäre mal interessant eine Schnecke zur Beobachtung zu "entführen" ^^

I'm not sure, but I think it depends mainly on the general life-span of the moss.
They really have everything they need "in there", so they should get as old as in nature.
Maybe even a bit older, as it's always warm and humid in the jar.
But I don't think that there are enough individuals in such a small jar to reproduce once the first generation dies.
(or enough space for non-sexual reproduction)
For actual numbers .. I collected the moss in this terrarium about 2 years ago:
