Males donβt have the scaffold ribs that female marsupials have, its the most distinctive skeletal difference between them. They provide direct support from the spine, adding strength to the pouch as the baby grows and isnβt simply pulling flesh against flesh. The ribs would also be a weak point in the kinds of fights that males in general and kangaroo males in particular have. Females donβt fight like that in order to protect those specialized ribs. If one brakes, carrying a Joey would become too painful. The males not having them allows them to endure more body blows.
