Description The theory goes that some sixty million years ago the Earth was struck by a HUGE meteor which sent up a cloud of dust that encompassed the entire planet, thereby causing a "Nuclear Winter; sunlight could not penetrate the dust cloud and an age of ICE ensued. Vegetation couldn't grow, and the herbivores quickly starved or froze to death. And of course without a population of planteaters around to snack on, the carnivores soon followed suit, clearing the way for the coming of man sixty million years later......give or take a week........
Here is something that I have thought quite a lot about:
The dinosaurs roamed the Earth for 165 million years. Think about what a long time that is!!! ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE MILLION YEARS!!!! They were a thriving healthy population. Relatively speaking, Man has only been around a tiny fraction of that. So consider: If the celestial catastrophy that brought about the extinction of the Thunder Lizards HAD NEVER HAPPENED---if the meteor had never struck our planet----is there any reason to believe that the Dinosaurs would not, to this very day, remain the dominant species on Earth...???

...well, anyway, on Father's Day one year ago I drew a Pterodactyl attacking a jet airliner (in my Gallery see 'MY SUMMER VACATION"), and so to continue the tradition, here is my 2007 Father's Day Dinosaur......kindly kick on the full view; I do hope you approve......

Done with a pencil. ...and apologies to Leo D.V for knickin' his title.....

Honestly, though, the dinosaurs were losing diversity towards the end of the Cretaceous.

They would likely have died out by the Eocene, but... their run was cut short.

They did not deserve what happened to them.

Oooh, dinosaurs! This drawing is, like the rest of your work, amazing. That meteor is great. I love how you went from Blues in the Night to this. Very different pieces but they're both equally fantastic.

GAH!

Ric ... This is GORGEOUS. I gotta agree with autumnleaf26 -- the only possible explanation for all these beautiful pictures is that you are God Almighty, lord of lords and creator of all things, and inventor of sliced bread.

And I agree with you -- it's mind boggling how long the dinosaurs lived. I'm pretty sure dinosaurs were around for 165 million years. Unless my math is off (which is quite possible -- I'm not the best at math.) Since the beginning of the Triassic period was 230 million years ago .... give or take a week. (My new favorite phrase!) I love dinosaurs. I've tried drawing them, but I could never find any good reference photos! Anyway, this is simply stunning, Ric, like always.

HEY HELLO HOWARYA.....
...and thank you for pointing out that stupid mistake in my comments---of course I meant to say 165 million, not 65....dumb dumb dumb I've since gone back and corrected it......
I glad to hear that you have an affection for Dinosaurs too. Since I was very little, the concept of a planet inhabited by GIGANTIC LIZARDS seemed incredible to me, and when I found out that it was in fact TRUE.....!!!!!!!
Thanks endlessly for the Fave, Kate. (...and the "GAH".......funny, funny)

Oh, don't be silly! Just a typo. You know when I submitted my sketch of Thumper, I originally wrote "Bambi the book and Thumper the character are copyright to Felix Salten" at the bottom, which, of course, isn't true since Thumper isn't in the book. I felt so stupid!

Five or six years ago I visited the Field Museum in Chicago -- the dinosaurs (and the other animals too) were the highlight for me. I never realized just how big a Diplodicus (I hope I spelled that right) was until I could stand at one end and gaze off into the distance at the other end.

...I had a similar experience: a couple of years ago "SUE", a reconstructed T-REX skeleton was touring the country and came through Anchorage, and my Daughter and I bought tickets to that exhibit. I just stood in front of it and mentally pictured how it would look with its meat and skin intact...it was incredible, and hard to believe that something so enormous and powerful once trod upon the Earth. As you can deduce, I LOVE the Jurassic Park movies.......

I was unable to be with my kid, so Fathers day was sad; but I went to see Fantastic 4 Rise of the Silver Surfer, which ROCKED ME LIKE A HURRICANE!!! plus I drew that big Lizard up there, so it turned out to be a very pleasant day. Thanks for asking, Autumn.....
