sigh It was the worst Godzilla movie I've ever seen. This CGI was to shame, the anime of Godzilla was already shit but this movie is not better! I am so happy when Toho decides to rename it. As in the year 1998 when they called the thing there only Zilla. Let's see how these CGI creatures will be called then. We Japanese have always only tolerated American versions but never accepted! I'm not here to make a deal on how your right/wrong about your opinion on King of the Monsters. You have every right to not like the movie, just like someone else has every right to love the movie. Ultimately it comes down to a matter of preference.
However, I will comment on your thinking that Toho does not seem to like the new Godzilla. On the contrary, they seem to absolutely love it. Toho has gone to insane extremes when it comes to marketing King of the Monsters, plastering posters on buildings and streets. They even gave a blue carpet premiere that ran the entire length of a street and attracted hundreds if not thousands of people.

While the movie did underperform as a whole, it racked up a lot of money in its Japanese run, and it grossed a lot more money on its home releases and streaming sales. Toho has even voiced that they would definitely love more Monsterverse movies from Legendary, which would mean extending Godzilla's rights as well. And as far as I can tell, Toho has been referring to Legendary's Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah by their original names, unlike something akin to GINO or Zilla.

I agree that anyone can say whether they like the movie or not.
The thing about Japan is:
Sure, banners and posters were put up in the streets and Toho hoped it would make money!
But!
It was different!
I live in Shinjuku in Tokyo and was in the cinema on the day of the Godzilla King of Monster release ! I swear to you!
A Godzilla movie has never been seen like this in Japan!
I was the only one with 3 people!
Even repeat tribute or Godzilla retro marathons have been more visited than this movie !
It is considered in Japan only among Special Marvel fans as just acceptable.
All the others, and there are a great many of them, have not even watched this film.
Toho bought DVDs and BluRays to show it in magazines as a nice movie, because you should give it a chance.
It is considered a floppy film in Japan and Europe.
Toho are Japanese and they don't tell Legendary to his face that they didn't like it.
You don't do something like that !

Well the kaijus are called titans i guess. Just their regular Japanese names with the word titanus at the beginning sometimes ("Titanus gojira" "Titanus Mosura", etc.)
