Description A watercolor postcard I painted in November to try out new technique.
The moose comes from the zoo in Munich.

I've always admired how watercolors could make scenes look so dreamy; like you're peering through a tear in space and gazing through into another world. You've done exactly that with this piece.

I love your blending first and foremost. The trees have such a smooth gradient look, and the blending of the moose's fur really helps the viewer
to identify it's texture. Having white to the sides of a water color piece aids the dreamy look; though the blotch of untouched white near the lower part of the moose's head did break immersion just a little but, it's not a deal breaker and it actually aids the dreamy watercolor visual. I feel the thickness of the forest and how lush it is through this painting.

I'd like to know about which new technique it was that you were trying for this piece. Whatever technique it was looks like it went over pretty well lol. Watercolors are still a major challenge for me, as I've never been able to really master the concept of washes, blending, etc ... without overworking my paper and making spots look warped..or just completely breaking the paper.

But more importantly, the small details. Even with a small tip brush they prove to be challenging for me - perhaps because mentally i'm so used to using tools like pencils and pens to make direct line work. In your piece, details down to even the nostrils, eyes, and some muscles throughout the anima's body are visible do to the lights, shades and colors you chose. The details aren't overdone or anything, it's as if they are just enough for the viewer to not only identify the moose, but also to give it depth. This piece is the first of yours I saw, and it led me to look at your others. I'm definitely going to be watching you lol.

Great work.

Thanks a lot for commenting!
The white blotch does seem off when everything has dried out and under daylight and not that shitty lamp I paint under
The 'new technique' is good old wet on wet, that I've never done before, as I prefer painting with overlapping geometric strokes. However this paper (Hahnemuehle postcard block and Cornwall rau with similar texture) allows very nice blending and you can lift paint easily from it. I've actually assembled a small wip from the progress pics I've taken - Wet on wet WIP: Moose-

I live where there are Moose, very nice.

The colors are correct and where they should be, the shading on the antlers is very good, the colors make a wonderful palette.
One thing though, the spot in the middle of the green there's white, it might be too much.

Thanks a lot!
It's my first try of wet on wet watercolors, I usually paint with little water applying geometric strokes. I've actually assembled a WIP from it, if you are interested - Wet on wet WIP: Moose-
The white spot may indeed be too white: does not look like a ray of light nor like jagged grass.

the way you let the colours flow into each other to create this shading makes the moose really stand out. it's very detailed and it is a real moose as if I am able to touch it. very good job!
