Malou is a formidable opponent. She is a volatile, hot-tempered individual who is difficult to get along with. She likes to do things her way and will fight anyone who attempts to convince her otherwise.
HISTORY:
Sired by G. P.'s Krugerrand—one of the foremost Thoroughbred hunter-breeding sires in the United States—out of the Rock Point mare, Rita on the Rocks, she was bred for the hunter-jumper ring; however, she defied all odds and to be proved one of the better fillies among a relatively weak group of Canadian sophomore females for owner-breeder Marc Tremblay, who raced her under the nom de course, Broad Oak Stud. Regrettably, her effort in the Wonder Where likely depleted her beyond what was initially admitted, and the pressures of racing were progressively fraying her already outré temperament. While she was not disgraced in finishing second to eventual year-end champion, Dulcis Victoria, in the G1 Spinster Stakes, her final two seasons fell short of her usual calibre and waned an element of her former lustre. She regained a modicum of esteem in her ensuing career as a broodmare, where to date, she has been a success—following the triumphs of her MGSW son, Lovers' Quarrel, which in turn, prompted an undisclosed sale in late 2018 relocated the sooty mare to the bluegrass to join Irishman Theo O'Donovan's Redshanks broodmare band.

A hefty, muscular beast of a mare, Malou is more colt-like than airy. She has an even rump and a decent shoulder with a strong caboose. Her only flaw, however, is her chest is fairly light on padding, and she has a big ol' wedge for a head. Her tenure as a broodmare has taken some time to show—her spine has begun to sway and her belly doesn't quite spring back as before—but still, she has aged well.

Nonetheless, any misgivings were swiftly addressed when she secured a black-type victory as a juvenile, and they were further dispelled when she returned the following season to claim two-thirds of the Canadian Triple Tiara. It is without question that the dark mare will be more distinctly remembered for her antics in the gate prior to the start of the 2009 Gazelle Stakes and, once more, in the Breeders' Cup Ladies’ Classic the following year, rather than for what she accomplished at the finish line.
