Personality: Hikaru is initially very quiet, though she always has a small smile on her face and tends to radiate a happy aura to those around her. She's very passionate about her interests and can talk for hours about something she likes without the slightest lull in her enthusiasm. She prefers not to cause conflict and will shrink back when conflicts arise. She's confident in her abilities in school and as a swimmer, but her confidence is easily shattered should something go awry. Hikaru is very gentle and compassionate, which makes it quite easy to manipulate her, as she dislikes seeing others upset and will go out of her way to help them. Despite her initial shyness, she is a very playful person and loves to tease and have fun with her friends.

Biography: Hikaru lives with her grandparents in Iwatobi. She had lived with her parents in Kita, Tokyo prior to her graduation from middle school, where she had attended an all-girls school with a nationally-ranked swim club. Her goal was to one day compete in the Olympics in the 200-meter individual medley, but her dreams were crushed when her mother sent her to Iwatobi, as the town's high school didn't have a swim club at the time. Hikaru had planned on attending a high-ranking boarding school in Minato, where she could concentrate on swimming, but her mother didn't want her to waste her life on a pipe dream, so she sent her daughter to her parents' house, where Hikaru wouldn't be able to swim competitively. Crushed, the already shy Hikaru withdrew into herself, throwing all of her efforts into her schoolwork, avoiding talking to others, including her grandparents, whenever possible. After the end of the first trimester at Iwatobi, Hikaru's classmates decided that they couldn't stand the girl's shy and overachieving nature, so Hikaru gradually became a victim of bullying, often finding tacks in her shoes or hurtful messages on her desk or in her shoe locker. As a result, Hikaru isolated herself from everyone in her class, rarely even bothering to answer questions in class. Several months after this occurred, Hikaru's homeroom teacher became concerned about the way the poor girl was being treated, and after a lecture about the psychological effects of bullying, the other students in her class left Hikaru alone, essentially ignoring her all together.

After the end of her first year of high school, Hikaru decided to start over as she despised being alone. She started smiling constantly, even when she felt like crying, and it reaped positive results with her new classmates, even though she still had a tendency to be left out. During math lecture on the first day of class, she was paired up with Makoto Tachibana for group work, and she was surprised at how easily the boy was to get along with, as well as how readily he talked to her. Since then, the two shared quick conversations with each other in passing. One day, she noticed that a first year boy and girl had been making frequent visits to their classroom to see Makoto and his friend Haruka Nanase during the breaks between classes. Curious, she began eavesdropping on their conversation, overhearing their intentions to start up a swim club. Unable to control her excitement, Hikaru turned toward the small group and enthusiastically offered to join them.

Trivia: In contrast to her male teammates' feminine names, Hikaru has a more masculine name.

Hikaru is a very organized person and prefers routine and planning to spontaneity, though her own impulses can get the better of her at times.

She has a rocky relationship with her older sister and parents as they don't see eye-to-eye about her dreams for the future.

Hikaru loves animals; after moving to Iwatobi, she saved up her own money and bought a black Turkish Angora cat she named Noa.

Despite having been off the swimming circuit for a year, Hikaru has kept a strict training regimen for her physical strength and endurance, running two kilometers and lifting weights daily.

She has a terrible habit of eavesdropping on conversations when she accidentally overhears something that piques her interest. This has caused her to accidentally answer questions that she hadn't been asked or to freak out about something she shouldn't know about.

She has a weakness for sweets and often has a difficult time keeping herself from eating them, even though she knows they're bad for her diet.

Because of her sweet tooth, she took up baking as a hobby and frequently makes different cakes and cookies or other treats for herself and her teammates.

Hikaru's favorite meal is Chigenabe and while there aren't many foods she dislikes, she absolutely refuses to eat natto.

Hikaru's best subjects are English and Japanese while she's bad at Chemistry.

Hikaru loves languages and she plans to major in English in university to become a translator, though she still aspires to become an Olympic swimmer.
