Description the city we miss mostly 12 - Warsaw capital of Poland

A city strongly and also tragically connected with my family history.
A great part of my mother's family from Warsaw (all only non religious persons) disappeared during the Holocaust and their remains are a bunch of photos of (now) unidentifiable persons whose stories I partially remember and with a destiny to be lost completely and for ever in a few years. There is no further testimony of their lives, aspirations and achievements and the only thing I still bear in my memory is that Warsaw was prior to the WWII a very elegant city and a great attraction point for all secular Jewish people living in what was at that time Poland.
I still lack the time to dedicate to finding out a bit more about this past ...

Somehow Marie Laforet song expresses the mixture of feelings I feel about this city and its complcated historyΒ  www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO4E12…

It was very interesting to read. I feel sorry for your family.

And I feel sorry for my capital destroyed in Second World War. This is still amazing that they rebuilt it from ashes.Β
Sorry for my country, who was on its way for better future when it was crashed and nearly 17% of its population was killed or died because of the war. There were nationalistic trends there, but maybe they wouldn't succeed... but we won't know.

Before the war our population was mixed ethnically, later it was not (not only due to the actions of the III Reich, I know).Β

Here is a link to a song from before war, with some photos of Warsaw. The quality of sound is bad as I think it was re-recorded from an old vinyl.Β The singer (here is she more saying than singing) was one of the most popular stars before the war, she was performing in Warsaw. It could be that some of your relatives used to listen to her songs:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsUACK…

She was arrested by the Germans, but saved, then she was taken to gulag by Russians, after being freed she organized help for war orphans (I once heard an radio interview with a man who was a kid saved by her). Died of tuberculosis in Lebannon. Β

I visited Warsaw last year. It is indeed a beautiful city.
But some of the stories from the past were very painful to hear.

I always look at your images in maximum closeup so I can see the faces of people going about their everyday business and at the windows, watching for people looking out. Tragically this same photo taken today would look dramatically different. Hard to accept how this disease has swept all before it across the globe in just a few short months and the terrible impact it has had on people's lives. What terrors lurk in our paradise. Many say that things can never be the same again and if that's true there'll always be your beautiful captures to remind us of how they were.

There is a square very like that near the railway station.

I have been to Auschwitz. It took a year or so for it to appear in poems and stories.
