Arbok used to be a sophisticated Pokemon. He was bought as a newly hatched Ekans, ignorant of the ways of the world and naive by nature. His trainer never really paid attention to him; he was a gift from a step-father to his newly adopted step-daughter, and unfortunately, she was not overly fond of snakes. For a while she kept him, leaving it to her butler to clean, care for, and raise the little Ekans. It was this man who showed him love, and, with time, Ekans began to learn.

His tongue, which had before had taste for nothing but Rattata, grew to like fine cheeses, crackers and wine. The smell and taste of tobacco appealed to him, and with the use of his tail he learned to pack and smoke a wide variety of flavorful pipe tobaccos. Ekans by nature have atrocious eyesight, and when the Butler found the Pokemon squinting at a local newspaper, he was kind enough to lend him his monocle. It was at that very moment that Ekans realized how much he had learned and grown, and with a flash of light he evolved into a fine and mighty Arbok.

But that was the straw that broke the step-daughter's back. Owning an Ekans was bad enough, but an Arbok was much too large to hide under the bed or whisk away into another room. With a scream she called for her step-father to be rid of the beast, and as much as the Butler pleaded otherwise he could not change the step-father's decision. Driving out to a nearby field the step-father released the Pokemon, pipe still in its mouth, monocle still dangling from its eye.

The Arbok, who had by then forgotten the ways of the wild, looked around at the leaves and trees and stars, and was afraid.
