Description

The original scene happens at night, original version here: www.deviantart.com/rikudou-ran…

To those unfamiliar with my lore, the person they're mourning was Momoshiki's partner and vessel. Hoshinaru is Momoshiki's biological son that was born to a surrogate mother and raised by Momoshiki and Kyo (deceased in this scene), a mortal man.

The cause of death was old age.

“The wind is picking up, maybe you should… come back inside for the night…”

Hoshinaru’s voice was quiet, almost getting lost in that wind as he slurred his speech more and more the closer he got to the end of the sentence, it sounded almost as if he was asking for permission to speak, his voice caught up in his throat, it felt as if a knot was forming in there, he swallowed it.

Momoshiki didn’t answer him. He stood before that grave under a pine tree as his straight long hair flowed in the rising wind, the Otsutsuki didn’t flinch, his expression was solemn, his gaze lost yet fixed in place at the same time, he wasn’t one to let others see him cry, but he didn’t bother wiping away the single tear that rolled down his cheek when his son approached him.

The younger of the two celestial beings walked closer towards his father and put his pale hand on Momoshiki’s shoulder, the latter reacted by shoving Hoshinaru off and scowling at him, which made the Prince flinch in surprise.

“What’s wrong?” the surprised male asked with concern, and Momoshiki simply snapped his teeth at him “Don’t touch me!”

“What?” Hoshinaru’s face turned into a mix of surprise, worry and confusion, his voice sounded the same way that his face looked like “What’s wrong with you!? Don't you know that he died for me also!?”

A gruff sound akin to annoyance left Momoshiki’s throat in response to Hoshinaru's complaint and he shook his head, he was not one to apologize, but Hoshinaru noticed that Momoshiki regretted his outburst.

His father wasn’t a person that was used to emotions like he is, and grief is something specially alien to his species. In that moment Hoshinaru felt blessed to be more acquainted with certain feelings, even if they were of the painful kind.

“I feel just like you feel right now, my bond with him was different but just as deep as yours”

Hoshinaru said in a soothing tone, but Momoshiki’s reaction caught him by surprise once again due to how hostile he was behaving.

“How can you speak with such confidence if you never experienced what I did!? You don't know what having a literal part of you die is like, you foolish creature!”

The oldest of the celestial beings barked back at his son, and Hoshinaru’s face went from confused to sorrowful, it greatly afflicted him how poorly the other Otsutsuki was dealing with the current situation, and it scared him also.

“It’s called empathy, Kyo taught me about it…” he said in a low tone, trying not to sound uppity, Momoshiki sighed, looking away “I’m not your enemy, I feel your pain, father, I also lost a part of my life, it’s not only you who’s grieving, perhaps… just for once… you could try to see past your own nose…that’s what he would have asked you to do”

Momoshiki let out a deep heavy sigh as he watched some fallen leaves swirl around in the wind on top of Kyo’s grave and then drift away out of sight in the darkness.

“You’re right. He was stupid like all mortals are, he never let me regenerate his body, he was my vessel and knew I could have done it but no, he died blind, deaf, weak, dumb as he's always been, and now, I have no reason to not to harvest this planet now that he’s gone”

Hoshinaru didn’t know how to take his father’s words yet once more, especially the way in which he was literally insulting the very same person that they were mourning, but he quickly caught his bearings.

“What are you talking about? That would be treason, he wouldn’t want you to do that. And you know that he never wanted anything to come at your expense, he didn't want you to sacrifice for him, he always knew he'd leave this planet and that's why he never accepted anything that he considered a liability to you, he was nothing but generous. Or are you just trying to cope in some sick and twisted way by acting so horribly?”

“Don’t get psychological with me, boy”

Momoshiki replied curtly, and walked away to sit down near the edge of the cliff that was the limit of their little patch of land atop of that hill surrounded by dense trees in which they would spend their time whenever they were on Earth.

Hoshinaru shook his head in resignation once again.

“When I was little and dad was explaining death to me, he said that when mortals die, they go to heaven, or… something like that…”

His voice was soft, and the tender way in which he spoke despite his own grief showed how understanding of his father’s own sorrow Hoshinaru actually was, that sensation of having a knot in his throat was back, he fought it off again.

Momoshiki didn’t respond, and after a small pause, the younger male continued to speak.

“I… didn’t understand, of course, I still don’t quite get it, admittedly hah… but, he said that when he was gone I would be able to see him and talk to him through the stars in the sky”

Momoshiki raised his head, his eyes briefly stared into the sky, but he remained silent. Hoshinaru sighed once again, it was hard for him to deal with his own heartbreak and his father’s at the same time while pretending he was stronger than he actually is.

He silently walked towards Momoshiki, and without saying anything further, sat down in the grass next to him, this time Momoshiki seemed to welcome his company.

The dark night sky was starry and the breeze was cold enough to be chilly. Unlike most nights, this one was silent, it looked like even the crickets had found shelter from the cold.

Hoshinaru didn’t know how much time had gone by, when his father’s deep yet low voice broke the silence. Momoshiki’s eyes were unusually dull, as they stared off into the thousands of stars in the sky.

“So, Hoshinaru, which one do you think it’s him?”
