Description Beyond the sea the story was heard by Beowulf.
He was the strongest of Hygelac's followers.
His father had feasted in Hrothgar's hall.
Gifts had been given, loyalties exchanged.
So Beowulf made ready a ship.
With fourteen warriors he set sail,
Intent on adventure.

Cover pic for the American and Canadian version of my adaptation of the epic poem 'Beowulf'. the European version has an alternative cover and is called 'Legends of Beowulf' but apart from that is exactly the same book.... I have no idea why!

The original epic/heroic poem 'Beowulf' tells the story of  a young warrior who comes to the aid of a community blighted by the fearsome monster Grendel and is regarded by many scholars as the highest achievement of Old English literature.

Pen and ink with digital colours.

For anyone who's interested, there's some more pics on my website rilargo.co.uk/beowulf/45926122… along with some from 'Gawain and the green Knight'  rilargo.co.uk/green-knight/459…

Looks like it's carved from wood, and lit by a nearby fire. Very dramatic and very fitting!
(I especially like the beard)

Thanks! That's exactly the effect I was after, It's good to know that it came across. Originally, I imagined him with a pointed beard but I felt he wouldn't bother trimming his facial hair in a time of crisis!
