This is amazing!!! Good thing they accepted you at risd or I would have been more intimidated about applying than I already am, because your work is stunning. I might go to the UCLA Art Institute this summer and I just wanted to know how it was..
RISD is seriously my dream school. I'm 14 and I already feel like I'm not good enough...
If you have time to like maybe give me some tips or some background about risd that would be awesome!! Sorry to bother you...again, I adore this piece!

First of all, I'm sorry I'm replying so late! But I'm glad you like it!
I've sadly not been catching up on deviant art at allll, only fb; it's terrible. But I'll try to start updating when I get more time!
By now acceptances are out so wish you all the best with your college choices! Let me if you have any questions about RISD I'd love to help out.
Laters!

I gotta say, it's fairly depressing that this only has... what? 4 favs? Cmon deviantart, you can do better. Anyway, great pencilwork here. I really enjoy the subtle details on the tentacle suckers, as well as the sorta-but-not-really crosshatching employed on the smoke on the right half. Great job!

Aw you're so encouraging hah and thank you so much! :') Me and my weird shading style..hah.
But it really is a shame that it's so difficult to get artwork noticed on this website; I'm actually debating on switching to another website. Maybe I should post the individual images so that more detail is shown, these guys seem so small I feel that it doesn't do the drawings justice.. What do you think?

Heh, no problem. And I hope that didn't come out as derogatory as far as the shading was concerned. Personally, I'm diggin' it.
As far as switching sites... PERSONALLY, i would just go to multiple sites. The trick is you just have to take an active role in whichever one you decide to make your home base of operations. As in posting, commenting, etc etc. Also, individual, higher rez images would probably be the way to go, yeah.

Well it's my freshman year, and I am also one out of many, so don't take what I say as a end all be all.
First semester was very hard personally because I came from a very close artistic community from my high school and I wasn't used to making friends again and building up that sort of community. Also, my school didn't exactly teach us how to think conceptually which besides technically skill, is something that MICA highly values. I also don't think I really understood where I wanted to go artistically or understood "the right way to make art" and that was very stressful.
Second semester came out alot better. I really love it here and I think because I was able to get through all of that first semester it made me stronger now. I'm taking my elective class which is ceramics. For many of your classes you have to make time to go to studio. Studio classes are 6 hours long here, and that probably goes the same for RISD. My work 2nd semester is much stronger based on what I learned 1st semester and I'm making alot more personal work.
Visit if you can, also, check out the work of other MICA students. Each school has their own aesthetic and sometimes that ends up playing out in your own work. I think I can sorta see it's influences on mine (not that I really mind. I mean, you can't make art in a vacuum; you will always have your influences)
One thing about MICA & RISD though, MICA offers General Fine Arts and I'm pretty sure RISD doesn't. I came into MICA thinking that I was going to be an illustration major and now I think I'm switching to GFA. GFA is really open ended and is sorta like a "mixed media" major where you sorta build your own major. You have to be really driven though to take this route, some people call it General Fucking Around because it seems so ubiquitous. Having this though seems to take alot of pressure off though. Also I've been told that it's really hard to change majors at RISD and they're pretty strict and concise in what they want out of you. It could just be my misconception, but look into it?
Also, if you're thinking about MICA, think about Baltimore crime rate too. MICA campus is safe, but you can't say that for outside the "MICA bubble".
Sorry I ranted on! If you have any more questions email me at oterwing@gmail.com. I don't really check my DA too often. I hope that helped =]

you should definitely come visit if you get the chance. also, no matter what school you go to, everyone was trained on different levels, but in general, it seems like even the most skilled students are not adjusted to conceptual thinking, so I dont think that's anything you should worry about. Freshman year at MICA is basically like gearing you towards that way of thinking.
Yeah I would definitely tell you to visit if you can and then you'd get a better feel of the school. I'm sure if you visited you'd also be able to get a tour guide.
Well, personally I feel very safe being on campus. Last semester I would walk back alone to my dorm from the other dorm on campus around 2 in the morning and I never face any trouble. I don't do that any more and though campus is safe, walking alone at night like that is not wise. MICA also has a shuttle too if you need to get to one part of campus to another and it's late at night.
Outside of MICA campus is another story though. There are definitely areas close to MICA that have very high crime rate. Baltimore is the type of city where the grimy places are not just located in just one part of the city, but is kinda spread out. The temperament of an area really can change in just one turn of a street. I have never faced any danger in Baltimore. If you are the type of person that likes to walk around in the middle of the night though to think and reflect, Baltimore is definitely not the place.
Campus housing at MICA gives you the option in picking a single room or a double room. A single room is about 300 dollars more I think, but well worth it. Housing is apartment styled and a full kitchen is included. Although I don't use my kitchen too much, I'm very glad that a kitchen is included in the dorms because I don't think many dorms do that.
=] Congratulations! I hope you pick the school that is right for you.
I'm working on a drawing project now that I'm pretty excited about. When I have the time aka when I'm not a lazy ass, I will document the work I've done for it.

Ohh you're a west coast kid. There are a decent amount of those here. It's good that you're visiting, I kinda came without visiting.
Well I had the unique situation in which I went to an arts boarding school for my last two years of high school and I knew what rooming with people is like. You just end up losing a lot of personal space and fro that it poses alot of conflict. Some roommates never leave and are antisocial and it makes for an awkward atmosphere.
My workspace is actually in the living room. My roommate really keeps to herself and hides in her room all the time. I use the living room as my work space. Living in a single room is only a couple hundred dollars more and I certainly recommend it. I have friends who probably would have done better off going with a single and admitted that after they realized that the price difference was not that great. That is not to say that double rooms can't work out. I have known many people who have had great experience in a double room.
The premises for the project was to pick a poem and illustrate the poem. After we illustrated the poem, we could do whatever we wanted with it (granted it was a drawing because it's for our drawing class).
I will try to document soon!
