He was the son of Hosokawa Katsumoto, a general of the Eastern Army of the Onin War,
and the grandson of Yamana Sozen, a general of the Western Army.

At Ryoanji Temple in Kyoto, there is a garden called the Dry Mountain Water Rock Garden,which he built.
It is a philosophical garden visited by Queen Elizabeth.
