Description Lol at the title.

I colored a One Piece page from the timeskip chapter. I liked Sanjis entry a lot, so that's why I chose this. XD
I wanna do the Nami-Usopp-part too, but I'm too lazy :/

I know there's some major fails, but ignore them.

How did you color the smoke in top row? I've seen people color clouds in a similar way but can never figure out how is done.

Let's see... I use GIMP. It has a Smudge Tool that simply smudges and mixes the colours. First I painted the whole smoke-area white and then added some grey in the edges. And then smudged the colors so they would look more natural together. Also, I used more transparent colors close to his mouth(that little bit of his hair for example) so the smoke would look transparent. UGH my english is so bad, and I'm no good with explaining. :/
Sorry. I hope it helped anyway.

Thanks, hmmm I'll have to give gimp another chance then. I've had trouble with it before and use the system downloaed from Paint.net mostly. I've found myself using Paint/net's effects:render-clouds for a lot of effects but the smudge tool would be very advantageous. I may have to delay posting my current work on a OP-color page so I can play with the smudge.

and you explained things perfectly, better than some others I've asked how they got their effects.

What I know, no other program than GIMP has got the smudge tool... I have Photoshop Elements, and loves it, but I can barely use it since it doesn't have a smudge tool. I love smudging too much. XD
But GIMP is great when you're used to it!

I've re-downloaded it to try it again. I had troubles before for some odd reason, likely same reason I have trouble with working with layers....impatience at programs I've no expereince with
I couldn't even work with Photoshop except to edit my photos, ot in coloring, tried and really got annoyed.

So far I like the Paint.net but as you point out, no smudge. I saw that gimp has render, which I use alot so I'll be trying to use gimp more or at very least, alternate between the two.

It's funny I've been a mamber here for many a years but its only recent times I actually started to color scans...I can't draw with spit so its coloring for me. I really need to move some old and very bad ones to scrap but not replaced them yet. I'm still tryign to learn the basics such as shading when it comes to skin tones ect

It was the same for me too, that's for sure.
I can make some kind of shading tutorial, if you want? Just to show how I color.
Also, you can look at this other picture I colored [link] The original looks like this [link] So I would say it's quite the different without all the shades.

Okay, I'll maybe wrap something together tonight or tomorrow. I can make a tutorial out of the next picture I'm about to color (:
