Description
This is from Star Wars Episode 2, Anakin tries to tame the mightybeast Reek in the Geonosian Arena. (BTW have you ever wondered why Anakin got to fight a Reek, Obi-Wan an Acklay and Padmรฉ a cat-like Nexu?)
It is an older picture (2003), but I decided to put it here anyway.
Digital painting using Corel Painter (oils, and paintbrush for the flying dust).

The answer to your question: maybe it's because the animals represent the characters that were fighting them
Btw, great job! I always loved this moment when Anakin used the Beast Trick ability to calm it down so he could ride it.
Fun Fact: The reek was a herbivore by nature. The only reason the one in the Geonosian Arena was alot more ornery and had a red-skin color was because for one thing, it was fed meat instead of plants. The rest was done by ill treatment in order to make them more combative.

So, Anakin got the most mistreated one, the herbivore Reek forced to eat meat.
Obi-Wan got the vicious crab-like Acklay which is difficult to hit (and has something like a beard under it's chin 
And Padmรจ got the feline Nexu โฆ small, agile and very dangerous.
Now that you mentioned it, I remember reading about the Reek.
That's why I included it to my pic Beast sketches (only tamed beasts there).

I really enjoyed this scene. It's probably one of my favourites.
I think it's so fantastic, because it shows each of their strengths and weaknesses, and that they're capable of taking care of themselves in their own way, if only for a few minutes!
Anakin relies on his energy and fireyness to battle the Reek, taking control of it, Obi-Wan is the faithful Jedi, tumbling and being evasive and defensive where possible with the leggy Acklay, and Padme is sneaky, nimble, resourceful, but can lash out when needed with the Nexu, I mean she's already at the top of her pillar before the beasts are released!
Anyway, fantastic job, I love the graduating skin tone on the Reek, and the shadows and crevices on the earthy arena.

Probably it's because of all those hidden meanings that I love SW so much.
At first I was actually going to paint all three beasts, but I never finished but the Reek.
Maybe I'll do a triptych of all three beasts someday!

I have begun with Acklay, but Obi-Wan was so difficult that I never finished it. BTW I have a Nexu action figure right on top of my computer-screen

I've collected sw figures for many years and I've got all three arena beasts โ I can say that nexu was hardest to find.
I've taken photos of some of my star wars figures, I'm planning to load them here too.
