Actually, Union Pacific Challenger 3985 is the largest steam locomotive still in operation, the Union Pacific Big Boy, the Challenger's later relative was the largest steam locomotive of all time.

That would be the Union Pacific Big Boy. One of 25 4000 Class 4-8-8-4 steam locomotives built between 1941 and 1944 by Alco.

Real nice photograph of the 4-6-6-4 UP Challenger No. 3985. Like anvisionor said it's world's largest operation locomotive. No it's cousin, the 4-8-8-4 "Big Boy" Locomotive. They hold the title of the largest locomotive ever build, when I was younger I was able to travel to St. Luis, Missouri, to visit the Museum of Transportation and get up inside the cab of one of the big boys still around. But none the less I love this photo because I've always been fascinated by trains and I love the challenger and big boy because they are so powerful and moving.

its not a big boy, look at the running number, all big boys had 4000+ numbers, thats y they were called the "4000 series". the 1 in the pic is a relitive, the "Challanger". even then there r larger and stronger loco's then a big boy

Oh dear God, it's beautiful, the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. I'd love to be at the helm of one of those babies.

This is pretty cool looking.
Do you have more pictures of this locomotive or even of train yards?

Yes I have a few more of this one. I have a train yard not to far from here if you would like more shots of trains. It was hard to get good shots of that engine because there were tons of people crowding around it. If you would like I can post a few more. Thanks for the comment!
