Koa was born to Hamoato Donnatello, with no birth mother, Koa and Deedee grew close to April O'neil and saw her as a mother figure.
Koa showed his fathers intellect and ambition at an early age, so it was only a matter of time before Donnie introduced him to science, and his lab.
When Koa reached 13, he became fixated in all things alchemy and science, and Donnie allowed him access to the lab whenever he pleased, so long as he was careful.
Koa often invited Angel to join him in his experiments, and she was happy to help out, and Koa genuenly enjoyed her company.
Koa was Angel's older cousin by a year, though he saw her as a younger sister, as she saw him as an older brother.
Him and his cousins were all raised in the same place, so naturally they formed sibling bonds, and were quite fond of eachother...most of the time.
Koa and Valiente always seemed to find something to argue over, while Ruby was always there to break them apart.
The kids' fathers weren't always around, as they had duties to attend such as protecting the city, so they were often on patrol. However, their mothers always stayed back to entertain the kids.
Nonetheless, Koa was generally close to his dad, great minds think alike, so they often had scientific theories to chat over, and Koa always brought up new questions every day for Donnie to answer, and he was more then happy to educate his son.
Deedee always spent more time with April, they often watched movies together while Donnie and Koa experimented different projects in the lab, but that didn't mean Donnie wasn't close to his daughter (more on that later).
Koa was close with his sister, but the two spent less time together as Koa got more enthralled with science and began pouring his heart into his studies, wanting to get accepted into a prodigious schcool.
Speaking of which, April did manage to pull some strings to get the kids into school, and they started close to when they each hit teen years.
Koa won many contensts presenting his inventions, and Donnie couldn't be more proud, he was always willing to showcase how much pride he had for Koa, since he didn't get much indulgence as a kid.

Lore:

Koa was tasked to assist Angel in a duo mission as the two were asked to infiltrate a sort of government facility that was marked on the outskirts of town.
They needed to retrieve some documents that were being held in the building, and were asked to strike at night.
They managed to sneak in to a ventalation system, and had a detailed map of the building lay-out, so directions weren't an issue.
They found themselves in a crowded room filled with crates of different sizes, Koa hacked the security cameras, while Angel worked on opening the door to the room the documents were being held.
Koa went through some of the crates, finding glass jars that held a pink substance, he reached in and grabbed a jar, opening the lid and peering at the gooy substance.
The texture felt off and he looked away for one moment and when he gazed back at the jar, glowing eyes glared at him inside the glass.
He yelled and dropped the jar, watching its glass walls smash, alarms sounded off from all corners of the room and Koa stared down at the pink ooze that spilled all over the floor.
Angel grabbed his arm and the two ran from the building.

Mystic powers:

To sum it up simply, the pink substance? That was Kraang parts the government had scooped up from the remaining pieces that were left behind.
Kraang didn't infect Koa in a way he turned into a mindless Kraang zombie, instead, a spirit of Kraang resides in his mind, just chillin'
Now, Kraang is able to gain control of Koa through his emotions, such as; Anger, frustration, or fear.
The reason the emotions have to be so specific, is to basically sum up Kraang personality, their a creature of anger and fury, and able to inflict fear into their subjects.
So whenever Koa's left eye turns pink, that's Kraang waiting to take control, there's no cure for Koa yet, but he does have treatment; Angel.
Angel's mystic energy keeps Koa's emotions stable, and that's an important reason why the two are so connected, their conection goes on spiritually, and Kraang's connection for Koa lives on mentally rather than physically.
