I can't understand how anyone can be scared of rats or mice. It's childish if you ask me, because rats are so cute! I would rather have a rodent pet than a pitbull.

Well, you're more likely to contract rabies from a dog than a rat. Actually, there has never been a rat-to-human transfer of rabies found in any species of rat...much less a pet rat. If you're referring to the Boubonic Plague, that was transfered to humans by fleas ON the rats, and those rats were black rats (rattus rattus) not the domesticated pet rat (rattus Norvegicus).
