Hmm, maybe because usually the main characters in that kind of series love eat, are strong, and are "not clever?
Even if, I think that Luffy wiped out the floor with the other characters - well, excluding Gin-chan xD - he is clever in a way, won't let hurt his friends (and what's more not into such a shallow way how, it is shown in it), he's able to give a good laugh

As you say he's clever and his actions are unpredictable sometimes,for example in the desert with Vivi,in Jaya against Bellamy when he decided not to retaliate in the bar...
