I'm surprised no one's commented on this yet--it's a really lovely piece!
Where did you get the bulb?

Is it an actual bulb or is it just a strangely shaped radio tube?

1930's Philco Radio tube with LEDS underneath I see your from the Minneapolis area, I shall soon be living there. Hopefully when funds are finished being collected for such an endevor and I pack my U of the Haul, I will finally be able to wave goodbye to Detroit (It's looking like Feb). Take care,

Jon Gosling

Fantastic. My good friend and recently inducted steampunk compatriot is also from the Detroit area.

Perhaps at some future date we shall all have to collaborate on some sort of death ray.

If you like radio tubes (and I see by your gallery that you do!) you'll love our local surplus store. They have loads of them for about fifty cents each, in various sized and configurations.

--I do hope you test your tubes before you put them in artwork! If you stumble across working ones, they can be worth a pretty penny.

ah very good! The only person I have met from this area into steampunk builds is Jake Hildebrant, who built the Damnation PC. A very talented builder he is! I myself, tinker. sometimes for the good, sometimes for the not so good lol

I'm from the Seattle mecca of steampunk myself, rubbing elbows with my good friends Porkshanks, Tinplate (who is an up-and-commer in the art community) and Nathan Johnstone from Abney Park.

...compared to Seattle, Minnesota's steampunks are pretty lame and tame, they pretty much don't do a whole lot but go to clubs and fashion shows. :/

Ah so you are from the west coast variance of Steampunk. It is with my grave condolences then that you are in the midwest region. There does seem to be less going on here doesn't there. Most of my good customers are from the west coast. California and Oregon Washington area seem to be very popular shipping destinations for my relics. Porkshanks! The same that runs TinplateStudios on Etsy then. I have him saved as a favorite of mine
His Prism of the Veil light is very nice, and I do believe he makes weapons too. I don't know anybody really in the Steampunk world outside of my contacts online. In my Etsy Steamteam group I love the work of Tom Banwell, and learn something new about quality construction every time he comes out with something new and amazing. The scene is pretty pathetic here in the Detroit area too. There was a few who tried to get a group going but it looks like it just wasn't that popular here. I am more of a hermit type anyhow. leave me in the studio with a pile of brass, copper and some good tea, and I'm all set. Abney Park is a pretty awesome band. I have them as one of my favs on my blog here [link] I am also on Brass Goggles message board as Lutra but do not post that often. have a good rest of the day, and take care!

Yes, you can see a couple pictures of me and Molly (porkshanks) in my gallery, and I think I have one picture of Tony (Tinplate) in there as well wearing a hilarious expression.
Tony's studio consists of an overrun dining room table. XD Yes, he mostly makes weapons, we produce works by the same methods and I've spent many a sleepless night at his place "bodgering" as we call it, and building creatures to put in specimen jars. "Hornet", the gun in my gallery, is presently in Tinplate's possession and will be shown at the Steampunk Exhibition Ball in the gallery there.
I'm a touch hermity these days, but I do enjoy being around other builders when I'm making something, so I've taken up working closely with as he's just getting into steampunk (starting off with the old nerf mod, for which I tease him mightily).
