Description Book I made for class project. The book is a collection of work created by designers who inspire me and it also contains some remixes of their work that I made myself. Every page juxtaposes each other to draw comparisons, contrasts and contradictions from the imagery on each side. To show the many facets of style that I am drawn to and how though they may be completely different in style, they have similar qualities and traits that are very important to me. The book was hand made. The exterior are zinc plates, I etched the letters into the plates through acid etching process to create a nice tactile cover that responds wonderfully to different light situations. Also, to show that I am a designer trying to merge the gap between hand-made and computer-made design. all comments welcome

100 pages, acid etched zinc cover bound with neopreme and outdoor nylon chair fabric.
Etching Process: I printed the text on transparent plastic sheets, applied a light sensitive adhesive tape to the top of the metal plate. I then placed the printed text onto the sheet, exposed the plate to light and then gently washed away non-exposed portions of the sheet(the letters in this case) in a soap bath. From there I placed the metal plates into an acid bath where only the text was exposed to acid and spent 30 min or so brushing the plate continuously to remove bubbles due to the erosion process in order to create smooth clear text impressions into the plate.

If I can afford it, I will make a color version !

I've been away for a while and I came back to a lot of posts. A few were asking who the designers in my book were. Because all my books are in storage here's a few off the top of my head

Charles Wilkin
Designers Republic
Stefan Sagmeister
Phantom: Research Foundation : De manifest
Me Company
Dixonbaxi
Chris Ashworth

There were a lot more some from scrap magazines I had just because I liked some element in it. But I used a lot of Charles Wilkin. And a lot of the spreads were my work basically using elements from all their works and incorporating them into my own compositions.

This is just amazing! the front cover is awesome, love the etched zinc plate, really works!

I'm currently studying graphic design at university and we have been given our next brief which requires us to make a hand made book based on an essay we wrote the other week. I roughly have an idea of what i want to do, but wasn't sure how to bind the book itself. I was just wonderin if you would be able to tell me what method of binding you have used and how u did it, just for reference and ideas. And if possible, any tips/tricks you may have when it comes to making books would be greatly appreciated. Thanx again!

theres many ways to bind a book, but I did a perfect bind and I found a tutorial with pictures here [link] Its pretty easy. you just need to make sure you print your pages back to back, so page 1 and 2 are back to back, 3 and 4 are back to back. you then stack them up and go to a place like kinko and have them cut the inside edge (the spine) of the book for you. Once they cut that edge, leave the other edges as tehy are you can get them cut when you have finished binding. Take the book home, get a table a board or ruler and some clamps. you must make sure the cut edge is perfectly flush. kinda tricky, but once get have it perfectly flush place it on the edge of a table.. the cut edge hanging off the table about 1/4 inch. you then place a board on top of the book so that the board aligns with the edge of the table. you then clamp it downj on both sides so that it squeezes the book to the table what this does is keeps glue from getting into the inner pages of the book and also makes sure you make the tightest bind possible. what I do once I have it secured is take some fine sandpaper and roughen the cut edge of the book a little. make sure to sand the entire surface of the cut edge. this allows the glue to adhere to the book better. once thats done, take some Tacky(a brand of glue I like to use) and either use your finger or a brush to coat the cut edge entirely. before you remove the clamps, make sure to do about 3-4 coats of glue so that you get a good bind. once its dry you can remove the clamp and you're basically done. covers can be a little more complicated. What I suggest you do is take a book and look at the construction of it. see how the cardboard is cut slightly larger than the book, how they secure the cover to the book, usually with a cloth. its fairly simple construction but can be tricky to assemble at the same time, if that makes any sense. You can read all the tutorials you want, but you dont get it until you mess up about 5-10 so go mess some up. maybe by time reemes of paper and get them cut down into smaller sections and make dummy books to mess up on till you get the process right. I had a lot of fun with it, but its not fun when you're working on a final and you screw up the binding process somehow, so i advise to make a lot of dummys first. hope that helps

Ya any questions about printing you have just let me know. I gave another guy a more detailed explanation of the process above. Its actually pretty simple. Its a basic photo etch. just takes some time as you have to sit over the plates for a few hours while they etch. I made sure they etched about 1/8th inch down into the plate to get some nice shadow play with the type.

Im leaving on a trip and dont have time to write out a long explanation, but heres the short one its a zinc etching process. put light sensative film on the plate and it adhears to surface of the plate. put transparency with text ontop of the film, expose it to light and rub off the exposed film in sodium carbonate water. whereever light didnt hit, the film stays soft, so thats wherever there was black text. now the plate is exposed where the text on the transparency was, everywhere else is hardened light sensative film. the film protects the plate from acid, which is next step. next i through the plate in a nitric acid bath for 4 hours, brushing the plate every 10-30 minutes and it eats away the metal from the plate whereever the plate is exposed. after that.. remove the film with a stronger solution of sodium carbonate and then i bound it to the book with neopreme (wetsuit material) using epoxi and thats that.. slightly longer than i thought for and explanation. if i was unclear, check out zinc etching. take printmaking if you're in college, its awesome thanks for comment.

well if i could produce these fast enough, id try to get them out to people, but it takes me about 2-4 weeks to make one. I guess now that i have all the content i could make them faster, but yea. lack of studio access also makes it really hard now. glad you like it

I almost want to say that this is DD worthy.
