Description “…I saw a shadow suddenly move along the brightly lit wall of the vestry. I rushed forward. The shadow had already opened the door of the church and gone inside. I ran as fast as I could and was able to take hold of the cloak that the shadow was wearing. At that moment the two of us were just in front of the high altar, and the moonlight coming through the stained-glass window of the apse fell directly onto us. I was still clutching the cloak. The shadow turned around, the cloak opened a little and I saw, as clearly as I see you, sir, a horrible death's-head glaring at me with eyes in which the fires of hell burned. I thought it was Satan himself. At the sight of that unearthly apparition, my heart failed me in spite of all its courage, and I don't remember anything from then until the time when I woke up in the little room at the Inn of the Setting Sun.”

Raoul de Changy, Gaston Leroux's 'The Phantom of the Opera', Bair translation, Chapter 6

I started this painting, oh... about March of last year. I had started it, but the composition just wasn't working. So, yesterday I completely started over, with a new composition, and this is what I ended up with.
(It isn't quite so 'speckle-y' looking in real life, that's mostly my scanner's fault.)

Acrylic on canvas, 16x20 inches

Incredible, those stain glass windows are works of art by themselves! I loved this scene, it;s a pity more people don;t illustrate it, I think you captured the emotion perfectly

Great job! You really captured the fear in the scene.
I really love all the detail in the stain glass windows and how the light shines through them. Very nice!

This is my favorite part of the book! Or one of them, at least. You've captured Raoul's fear well.

You've captured Raoul's fear well.
I'm glad you think so; that was the main thing I wanted to show.
Thanks!

Ahh, one of my favorite scenes in the book. I like how you let the colors of the light filtering through the stained glass windows sparkle on the church floor. Poor Raoul, he doesn't know what he's dealing with

I love how you captured the "skeleton in a cloak" idea. Very well done. At first I was going to say propotion on Erik are off but then I realized it suppose to be since well...he isnt like any other person. In contrast Raoul is normal.
