Description
A British Railways Class 108 diesel multiple unit train formed of two driving motor cars, composite DMCL M51562 (BR Derby, 1959) in blue and second/brake DMBS M51922 (BR Derby, 1960) in green, sits in the South Yard depot of the National Railway Museum in York. While some 108s were run as three-car or four-car trains with intermediate trailers, the NRM's 108 seems to have always been two cars long since entering preservation in 1992. Of the 333 cars built, 49 are preserved according to the Railcar Association website, as BR decided to offer the class en masse to heritage railways when it came time to retire these first-generation DMUs. The aluminium bodies (which resist corrosion) and lack of asbestos in the interiors have also helped the 108's survival. If you live in the UK, your local heritage railway might have its own operational 108s.
