Description
With traffic increasing after the Civil War, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad needed stronger locomotives, so master mechanic J.C. Davis designed the Class K "Mogul" 2-6-0, which could produce almost 8600 pounds of tractive effort. No. 600 was built by the B&O's own workshop in 1875, named J. C. Davis after its designer, and assigned to both passenger and freight trains, with more of its service being in freight as time went on. It was withdrawn in 1893 as No. 918 but preserved for exhibitions such as the 1927 Fair of the Iron Horse, where its original name and number were reapplied. Despite being heavily damaged by the 2003 roundhouse roof collapse, J.C. Davis has been restored and is back on display at the B&O Railroad Museum.
