Description
In the early 1960s, the recently-established Bluebell Railway was granted permission to use a coat of arms containing the arms of the Earl of Sheffield, the Lords of the Manor of Horsted Keynes, the town of East Grinstead, and the town of Lewes. The slogan Floreat Vapor is Latin for "Let Steam Flourish," reflecting the Bluebell Railway's ongoing commitment to maintaining a working fleet of steam locomotives on a preserved branch line. Thanks to the initiative taken by the Bluebell Railway, the first standard-gauge heritage railway in Britain, dozens of historic railways and locomotives have been saved, and there are even reconstruction projects for some lost railways and locomotives. This coat of arms is painted on one of the saved locomotives, former South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SE&CR) 0-6-0 tank engine P-323 Bluebell, which sat in Sheffield Park Station's engine shed when I visited last summer.
