Description
Some of my pictures of the Meiji Shrine (明治神宮) in Tokyo, the first Shinto shrine -- and first religious place of any affiliation -- I visited in Japan. Despite the relocation of the capital to Tokyo occurring during his 1867-1912 reign, Emperor Meiji is buried at the Fushimi-Momoyama cemetery in Kyoto, and the imperial enthronement continues to be held in Kyoto as it has been for over a thousand years. The shrine also follows traditional Japanese architecture, with the torii (gateway) guarding the entrance and buildings arranged around a courtyard.
