Description The New Haven Railroad and successors (Penn Central, Conrail, Metro-North, etc.) bought sixty EMD FL9 (NH EDER-5) five-axle electro-diesel locomotives in the late 1950s to eliminate locomotive changes in New York City (which requires electric locomotives) and allow a single locomotive to cover an entire Connecticut-New York commuter route by itself.  They drew power from a third rail via shoes on the three-axle rear bogie.  Some FL9s have survived into the 21st century including NH 2040 (EMD, 1960) which was repainted by Metro-North as New York Central Railroad 2013 (to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the NYC Hudson Division) and donated to the Danbury Railway Museum in Connecticut.  The FL9 looks good in NYC lightning stripe livery, but that is not an identity it ever wore in service -- NYC never operated FL9s!
