Description In 1721, French architect Louis H. Pilié took inspiration from the Place des Vosges in Paris for the Place d'Armes, a large square in New Orleans.  It was renamed Plaza de Armas during the Spanish occupation, which like the French name referred to a square where citizens could be armed in military emergencies.  After the United States' purchase of Louisiana from France and the War of 1812, it was renamed Jackson Square for general-turned-president Andrew Jackson, who defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans and kept Louisiana in American hands.  Today, Jackson Square is decorated with a statue of the general, a fountain, an American flag, and many beautiful tropical plants and flowers.
