Description In December 1636, Manchu leader Hong Taiji -- first Qing emperor of China -- led a Manchu-Mongol-Chinese army into Joseon dynasty Korea to force it to recognize Qing, instead of Ming, as the ruling Chinese dynasty.  After losing the capital, King Injo led his retinue and other survivors to Namhansanseong Castle near Seoul, where they resisted the Qing siege for almost a month and a half until Hong Taiji's brother Prince Dorgon took the royal family hostage at Ganghwa Island in January 1637 and Korea submitted to Qing.  This tributary relationship continued until 1895, when Japan defeated China and began taking over Korea.  A selection of uniforms and weapons from the war is displayed in this exhibit.
