Description This U.S. Army Air Service Standard E-1 biplane trainer was rescued from a barn in Dayton, Ohio by airplane collector Sidney L Shannon Jr.  It was displayed at his museum in Fredericksburg, Virginia until it was moved to the Virginia Aviation Museum in Richmond, where I saw it before that museum closed and the plane returned to Fredericksburg.  The E-1 was originally meant to fly as a fighter, the only American-built fighter at all during the First World War, but was so far behind foreign contemporaries such as the Spad in combat tests that the Americans flew foreign-built fighters and demoted the E-1 to trainer.
