Description Well over a thousand years ago, Shizuoka Sengen Shrine was established to worship Princess Konohanasakuya, the goddess of Mount Fuji.  It sits on the northern edge of downtown Shizuoka City at the foot of Mount Shizuhata, and is quite close to the ruins of Sumpu Castle.  After the influential shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu retired to that castle in 1589, he ordered the shrine rebuilt and began worshiping there, giving Sengen Shrine a close association with the Tokugawa shogunate.  When I visited the shrine, it was being prepared for New Year's Day.
