Description Simplex 0-4-0 petrol-mechanical locomotive No. 4217 was built in 1925, a time when internal-combustion locomotives had yet to seriously challenge steam locomotives on the main line but had already proven their worth as shunters.  Not much information is available about this Simplex at the National Railway Museum's Shildon Locomotion Museum, but I assume it was used on an industrial railway, where its quick start, reliability, and efficiency would have come in handy.  Note the sideways seat, which gave the driver an equally good view in either direction.

Neat--it would be an interesting static model on an HO scale layout

As a volunteer member of the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Railway Trust, I am very familiar with Simplex internal combustion locomotives. Simplex built narrow-gauge locos as well as standard-gauge versions.

Interesting to see how open this locomotive is.
