Description In the early years of transcontinental aviation, railroads held the advantage over airlines, as trains were far more comfortable than airplanes, and railroad stations were easier to access than airports.  As seen on this 1930s "By Plane and Train" advertising poster at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, airlines and railroads would sometimes work together, such as Transcontinental Air Transport (TAT, later TWA), the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W), and Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway (ATSF).
