Sociedad General de Ferrocarriles Vasco Asturiana / Ferrocarril Vasco Asturiano (VA) 1004 (Alsthom, 1965) → Ferrocarriles Españoles de Vía Estrecha (FEVE) 1053 was the largest diesel locomotive in action when I visited the Basque Railway Museum's 25th anniversary festival in Azpeitia, Spain in October 2019. The French-designed Series 1000 diesels were fairly common and widespread on the Spanish meter gauge network, with 42 built from 1955 to 1967 for future FEVE constituents and other railways like CGFC in Catalonia. Some are still operating in Spain and a few others have found new roles in Portugal, Argentina, Benin, and Ethiopia!
