Daughter to an important Scottish doctor, miss Grace Carmichael was born in 1809, the eldest of three siblings, and, being deemed as less beautiful than her younger sister, Iona, and not being a male, like her only brother, Lyle, she grew into an ambitious individual in an attempt to gain her father’s approval. Aged twenty six, she would marry lord Jacob Allenbrought, a young man from a noble yet impoverished lineage, who would sire her only surviving son, Barnabas Enoch Allenbrought, less than a year later. But the child was born with albinism and, seeing her son as an abomination and her marriage with Jacob as a failure, she abandoned them both before the infant turned one year. Though she remarried six years after separating, she would never birth another child, suffering miscarriage after miscarriage and stillbirth after stillbirth, in hopes of fulfilling her second husband’s desire for a son. The shadow of regret, sickness and guilt followed her until her death in the year 1860.
