There's always some sort of satisfaction you get from modelling items like this...staffs, swords, etc...especially when the idea just feels right...very nice implementation here...though if I were you I'd go back and add a glow and glare to the crystals, make it stand out.

Its easy...make sure your renderer is set to Mental Ray...create a new mental ray material, in the surface slot put the glass (lume) shader. In the glass shaders surface slot put a glow (lume) shader with its brightness set to about 12-15. make sure you set the colors of both the glass and glow shaders to match the color you want. Fool around with the other settings.

If you want also you can put a mist (lume) shader in the volume slot of the mental ray shader.

For the glare shader, its hidden, you'll have to unhide it by editing the mental ray mi file...long story but it goes in the camera output slot of your render settings. Look at my Compass Rose (latest deviation) for an example of what the glare shader, along with the above mentioned shader settings looks like...if you're using max8 or max7 I can make you the materials and put them in a material library and email them to ya if you'd like.

ahh i use maya.....and i did use mental ray but im not sure what settings to mess with to get the glow....and i dont think they are the same as max if thats what you were trying to explain them for but thanx alot

Well, they are the same...but they're probably implemented slightly different. I bet if you look in your shader listings or material listings you'll find all of the above. Give it a shot. Also, if yer really looking for the best place in the world to learn all about this stuff...drop over to the cgtalk forums.

i looked around.....but i didnt find it lol.....i went through maya help and i was looking for it too.....and i didnt see it maybe im looking for the wrong thing.....so i dont know......i probably didnt look hard enough.......there was something called luminace(spelling)....and i was gonna try that but i got upset with some other stuff lol...i like your work dude.....its really good wish my stuff came out that good...well....i probably gonna do a deviant watch.....and thanx for the help too

Did you switch to the mental ray renderer? A lot of those shaders won't even be available unless you're actively set to render with mental ray...I know max defaults to a scanline renderer, and you have to switch it to mental ray...try that.

Thanks for the watch dude!

IF you want to, export the staff to an obj or something and send it to me and I'll render it in max with a nice glow for you we could call it a collaboration or something and it might even buy us both some extra exposure.
