Description Northrop F-5E Tiger II tactical fighter. Equipped with 2 General Electric J85-GE-21A afterburning turbojets it had a maximum clean airspeed of 1,083 mph and a service ceiling of 51,800 ft.

There were earlier versions but the F-5E Tiger II was produced in the 1970s. Most people might recognize the F-5E as the opponent fighter in "Top Gun". In fact it was used in the US Navy Top Gun school at Miramar as the aggressor aircraft for "dissimilar air combat training". Only the government can take a simple description and make it difficult. The sign at the Pacific Air Museum said that F-5E Tiger II aircraft are still in use for dissimilar air combat training, especially after it was found that they could run an F-5E Tiger II for 1/3 of the cost of an F/A-18. It is quite smaller than an F-14 that was parked nearby and is in my Aircraft gallery.

I could write on and on, and usually do. But since anything you need to know about the Northrop F-5E Tiger II can be found with an easy internet search, here's a couple of places to start: [link] and: [link] and a YouTube video of an F-5E aggressor squadron: [link]

Yes, that is true.  The F-5 is still used by a few aggressor squadrons at Fallon, Nevada.
